IN THE CHARMING WHITE MOUNTAINS
Lat. 44 (Degrees) N.; Long. 71 (Degrees) W.
The White Mountains cover an area of about thirteen hundred miles. they belong to the Appalachian (pronunciation) system. it is only in winter that these mountains seem to merit the name of the "White Mountains", for seen from a distance in summer, in the ordinary daylight, they are a pale, dim green. The first exploreres called them "The Crystal Hills." The old name given by the Indians is the most poetic; they called the range "Wauthbek-Methna" - "the mountains with snowy foreheads."
These mountains are compsed of granite rocks, and represent the work of erosion. The rivers have cut into the former high plateau so such an extent that it is now a range of high, rounded summits, two of which Mt. Stickeny and Mt. Pleasant, we see in this picture. One of the most famous features of this region is the "old Man of the Mountain" a remarkable profile of a human face eighty feet high. It is formed by three rocks which extend out of the side of what is known as Profile Mountain.
The White Hills are famous for their height and ruggedness, and are unsurpassed by any east of the Rockies. The scenery is remarkable varied and picturesque, and most parts of the region are accessible to tourists, through the railroads which penetrate to the very heart of the mountains. Besides being noted for the scenery, the White Mountains are famous as a health resort. They are a paradise for the nature lover, spreading before him treasures from a wide range. Thus, birds which usually nest in Canada find near the mountain tops a place equally pleasant. Wild flowers peculiar to high altitudes are also found here.
