Given to meeting having to do with the Downtown Development Authority, with special emphasis on building architecture.
Intro
Rawlins History, explain Rawlins’ origins, how it was unplanned and unplatted until 1877; detail typical construction from 1868-1880’s.
Tell about lack of wood and the Railroad use of native stone, ie: the Roundhouse, Machine shops; Pre-fab Morrie chapel, use of caves and dugouts in the banks of Sugar Creek.
Major woods for buildings shipped by rail from East. Built utilitarian with two story business with living quarters included.
All came to an end with 1880’s. Explain the growth and troubles which began in 9/1879. Stone becomes the building material to express stability and permanence. Public Buildings: Courthouse, Central School, Presbyterian Church, H. Rasmussen house on Capitol Hill.
Go into History of Old Pen. Premature setting of cornerstone. Significance of A -Block to the era, its development.
