Scope and Content

A 11" x 12.25" scrapbook with a gold textured cover with the words "personal christmas cards" printed in the lower right hand corner and the word "white" printed on the spine of the book. The front cover has become detached from the book and the back cover is detaching at the lower edge. Glued to the front cover is a white paper with the following information printed in blue ink: "In memory of Dr. A. F. Thode. Born Germany-March 31,1858; Died Rawlins, Wyoming-March 12, 1941. The Carbon County Museum. Rawlins Wyo. Assembled by Kathryn R. Bennett- 1957." This book was a Christmas Card sample ordering book used for a scrapbook. Book is full of clippings on Dr. Thode, members of his family, friends, other people and events, receipts, bills, post cards, and other items. Page 1-1957 clipping on Christel Thode to move to La Jolla, CA. Page 2-UP Old Timers Edition article on Dr. A. F. Thode, 1st dentist in County Page 3-Dr. Thode turns 81, gives history of his life Page 4- 9/10/1929-Clipping in cartoon form on Dr. Thode and his life and accomplishments and an article. Page 5-3/24/1937-Startzell and Thode initiated in 1881 into Odd Fellows, Rawlins Lodge No. 4, gives history and names of early members. Page 6-9-Lengthy article on Dr. Thode turning 80 years old, 4/6/1938; history of street improvement programs, 2/2/1938. Page 10-Clippings on A. F. Thode as a candidate for councilman of Ward 2: Obituary for Mrs. Mabel Thode, wife of Dr. A. F. Thode. Note on clipping states that she died 2/26/1937. Pages 39 and 41-Lengthy, comprehensive article from the Rawlins Daily Times dated 8/23/1949, giving the history of the Union Pacific Railroad beginning with a speech by Sen. Charles Sumner in 1853 in which was proposed a railroad from the Atlantic to the Pacific and ending with the importance of the railroad to Wyoming and Carbon County in particular. Article states that 926 people in Rawlins worked for the railroad in 1949. Page 40-A certificate issued to Dr. A. F. Thode date 4/9/1895 showing that he was elected city trustee of Rawlins for 3 years, signed by Warren Galvin. Page 42-An advertisement pamphlet for Deaco Electric Starting Lighting for Ford Cars issued by Detroit Electric Appliance Co. Written in blue ink: "the very beginning of the Carbon County Museum started as Friends of the Library and had expected to have it in part of the rooms assigned to the Library. Bills lists items purchased. A sheet of paper To A. F. Thode dated 10/29/1912 for Withers House for wall paper? ceiling, border. Page 72-A bill from Smith-Startzell Company, "Dry goods, clothing, furnishing goods and fine Millinery, boots and shoes, hats and caps, double store on Cedar Street" dated 3/18/1899 to Dr. Thode on their billing stationery. Stamped paid. Page 73-A colored postcard of Cheyenne Street scene during Cheyenne Frontier Days, dated 1910. Page 74-A bill from J. A. Page 97-Handbills thrown around Rawlins in 1910 given to museum by Christel Thode. Sign reads: "Look out for cars, take warning, Startzell and Doty have just received their new Lambert cars and will be practicing all day," etc. Note at bottom: "Startzell and Doty were early day sheep men and also owned the Rawlins Mercantile Co store in Rawlins at that time."
