Description

This was taken in 1884 at Medicine Bow Crossing by F. M. Baker. Is Warden F. A. Hadsell ranch at Elk Mountain. Update - 2009: One sepia print on cream mat and two scanned copies of F. A. Hadsell residence. In the background is Elk Mountain. Center of photo has trees & buildings. On photo right is a large barn with two levels on one end & sloping roof to one level on other. There is a lean too roof on end on photo right. Two log structures are to left of barn. One has a large opening & other is a small cabin. Wagon wheels are beside cabin. Behind these is an open shelter of roof & poles. A two story house with one story extension & open porch with columns is beyond in an opening in the trees. a pole buck fence surrounds the house in a wide area. Portions of a fence can be seen through the trees. Written on back in pencil: "Bud Herman Elk Mt. WYO." Written on frame back in blue pencil: This picture puts me in mind of my friend Frank Hadsell. The house here shown is not the original Hadsell house; his first house was a log house just across the lane north of this house shown as in this picture as a store in its place. The Overland Trail passing between the new house and the original log house and his barn is sill in same place as the old Barn, but been replace by a Big Log Build by Hadsell himself. Also new house was built by him but now is owned by the Quealey Estate and occupied by John Quealey. In this lane between the barn and the old log house where Hadsell first approach me and tried to hire me to work for him. But did not agree to wages. That evening which I well remember the 4th day of Oct 1882. But, the 5th I did become his hired man. So this picture appeals to me is was 18 yrs old and Hadsell 30 now I am nearly 63 and his is dead at 75. Rubie Rivera 12-7-27 Condition: Good. Scratched, accretion, liquid stain on bottom.
