Description

Billie Collins, stage coach driver from Rawlins to Lander, taken in 1904 when he was 23 years old. Update 2008: Black and white print. Snapshot. Mounted on matboard. Image of a man, casually dressed with pants in boots, coat, vest, shirt, neckerchief, hat, standing by the back wheel of a canvas covered buggy. Canvas bags on ground in foreground. Low hills in background. Written on back in blue ink: "Billie Collins standing by the [cut off] type of stagecoach used [cut off] Collins drove the stage from [cut off] Kuols was superintendent [cut off] route to Lander. Stagecoach and horses [cut off] in 1906. then [cut off] {auto}mobile took their place. Collins is the last of the old sta{gecoac]h drivers living around Rawli{ns}." "(1-CW)" "3" Written in black ink on back: "Copied-mounted". Written in pencil on back: "5238" Mounted on acidic matboard. Cut down from original size-writing on back cut off and edges rough. Image surface missing at top and bottom of left side; scuffed and slightly soiled. Parallel lines from negative across image. Update July 2011: Black & white copy print. Written on back in black ink: "Billy Collins standing by the stage. This was the last type stage coach used. It carried mail from Rawlins to Lander and discontinued in 1906, and automobiles replaced it. At one time Mr. Collins was with the stage and horses had to swim Separation Creek and he put the mail on top of the stage. This picture was taken in 1904, Mr Collins was 23 yrs. of age." Neg.
