Description

James Hawley, came to Rawlins in 1877 and held many offices in the late 1870's and 1880's. He was a coroner, J. P. County Treasurer, Probate judge and a member of the Territorial Legislature. This photo was taken in 1876. Update 2009: Sepia print. Studio portrait mounted on matboard with blue back. Oval head and shoulders portrait of a man in a dark coat, white shirt, and dark bow tie. He has short receding hair and a long mustache. Written on front in lower left in black ink: "James R. Hawley." Printed on back in black ink: {ribbon above cherubs drawing camera on wheels} "J. Crissman artist" {below scene} :Laramie, Wyoming". Written on back in black ink: "1-sabalo" "Copies-mounted" "5233". Written on back in blue ink: "James R. Hawley 1876" "5". Written on back in pencil: "5" "80%" {red} "Page 54, pix 5 2 x 2". Written on post it (removed from back 1-16-09): "James Hawley came to Rawlins in 1877 an held many offices in the late 1870s and 1880s. He was a coroner, J.P. County Treasurer, Probate Judge and a member of Territorial Legislature." Mounted on acidic matboard. Cut down from original size. Image missing along center left edge. Image surface badly soiled and stained. Back soiled, surface missing along right side and upper edge. One 5 1/8 x 3 1/2 black and white copy print. Written on back in green ink: "James Hawley" Emulsion scratched on left side. Update July 2011: Black & copy print. A white adhesive tag on bottom reads: "James R. Hawley". Written on back in black ink: "James R. Hawley 1876. He came to Rawlins in 1877 & held may county offices in late 70's & 80's. He was coroner, Justice of Peace, County Treasurer, Judge of Probate Court & member of Territorial Legislature. He held inquest of Dutch Charlie, Big Nose George, Opium Bob & Jim Lacey. The Legend is he would hold court any place when he met the Sheriff, whether it was a store, saloon, Railroad Shop or out in the street."
