Description

Roger and John Buchanan in front of the Mrs. M. L. Buchanan Clothing and tailoring shop, Rawlins, 1891 at the corner of 4th and Front. Update 2009: Black and white print of store on 400 block of Front St. Top of building has parapet with elk horns attaches, sign on store front reads: "Mrs. M.L. Buchanan. Clothing and Gents Furnishing Goods." "Merchant Tailoring". Large windows are on sides of entrance door. Two men and a small boy are standing in entry. Men are smartly dressed in three piece suits and ties. Boy has on straw hat with large band above brim, print shirt, short pants, and leggings. Painted on window on photo right:"Boots, Shoes, Hats, Caps, Notions". Signs below windows:"Fine Tailoring". Written on back in black ink: "Roger and John Buchanan's store on Front Street, about 1891. Standing at left is Mr. McClelland, the tailor; boy, Edwin Buchanan; right is John Buchanan. This store was located first on Front street and later on 4th street. McClelland, the tailor married Mrs. Emma Stewarts daughter Agnes. Mrs. Stewart was a practical nurse in Rawlins around 1905. Her younger daughter Anna married Dr. Jolley who had the first hospital in Rawlins located on the corner of 4th and Cedar St." Written on back in blue ink:"Photograph about 1892 to 1893, Lot 18 Block 23, 400 block West Front ; DLK & RB". Written in red pencil: "Copied by state and mounted." In pencil:" Page 30, pix 1 4 1/8 x 6." Taped to back of print: 1878-1880 Jone Granger owner. 7/82 building erected for Lucretia Bailey Millinery. 11/82 Any Kelly. On the West 10/1883 Lovey with Jewelry. 4/1884 Lot A. 9/1886 Johnson Shoemaker. 11/91 M.L. Buchanan Clothing. 11/93 sic[Buchanan]. Condition good. Has been cut down, scratched, corners bent, emulsion impacted. Update March 2011: One black & white print. Written on back in black ink: "Roger and John Buchanan's store on Front Street, about 1891.
