Close up of R. Widdowfield stone at the old Carbon Cemetery. Update 2008: A black and white glossy reprint of a Polaroid photograph matted in a 7 1/2 x 9 1/2 frame. Window of mat frame is 4 5/8 x 6. The photograph shows the square base and bottom section of the white stone obelisk of Robert Widdowfield's grave marker in Carbon Cemetery, Carbon, Wyoming. Engraved into bottom section surrounded by distinct frame: Robert Widdowfield(in crisp print). Murdered (in more ornate print) near Elk Mountain (in slanted back calligraphy) Aug. 19. 1878 (in thicker lettering) Aged (in wider spaced calligraphy lettering) 33 Years. (In wider spaced calligraphy and is a curved line). Vegetation covers the lower base except for exposed right corner. Written on photo back: "The stone at the grave of Robert Widdowfield in the old Carbon Wyo Cemetery. He was shot when he went in pursuit of Big Nose George and his gang when they tried to wreck a UP Train that carried the pay car in 1878. Tip Vincent was also shot and killed. He is buried in the Rawlins cemetery. Both stones were erected by his friends. Given museum by Mrs. Al Pence, Laramie, Wyo. Stamped in black ink on back: Polaroid copy service. There is blue ink mark at photo bottom on mat board. Slightly bent corners and blemishes at left side from wear. Mat has a fold out section in back so that frame can be stood up for display.
