Description

A framed colored oil painting of three horses ( one buckskin, one reddish brown, and one light beige color) standing in a greenish pasture by a small stream with light purple and brown mountains in the background. Frederick Large 69 is painted on lower right corner of canvas front. Painting has an ivory colored canvas mat at inner edge and "wormy" look to the golden tan wood frame. Donor states the view is looking toward Elk Mountain and that the artist Virginia Large was a well known Carbon County artist. Other notes from donor state that the artist came from Chicago and studied at the Chicago art Institute. She came West and married a cowboy. She lived East of Saratoga and that she was crippled. Painting was appraised by W. G. Woodward for $3500. Written on back of matboard in black ink: Bought by Barbara and Bob Cook, 1969. From Mrs. Large at their ranch in Saratoga. Paid $125. Good condition. Back of frame has several dark scuffs. Frame measures 15 3/4" x 17 3/4."
