Black and white copy print. Portrait. Head and shoulders portrait of a man wearing a dark suitcoat and light colored shirt. His hair is short and he sports a mustache. Written on the back in blue ink: "George Parrott (Big Nose George)[.] We do not know when this picture was taken or where[.] [unclear] Meyers The photographer thinks it was given to him by Bert Marshall and was among the photographs at the State Penitentiary which is located in Rawlins. Bert Marshall worked in the office at the penitentiary for many years-Given to museum by Mrs. Ed. F. Bennett, Rawlins, Wyo- The penitentiary was first in Laramie and the pen was finished and the prisoners brought to Rawlins in 1898 or 1899. But in the early days the prisoners were hung at the County Jails. Big Nose George was never in the Wyo State Pen-in the county jail only-and it was at the time he was hung, located on the corner of 5th and Cedar street on the side where the Ferguson Mer. Store now stands." (note: this is not true) "He was a member of a gang which attempted to rob a UP train. Later the gang shot and killed Widdowfield and Vincent, two Carbon County Deputy Sheriffs. Parrott escaped and was caught nearly 2 years later. After being returned to Rawlins he attempted to escape from jail and injured the jail keeper. A group of Rawlins citizens then lynched him on Front Street near the U.P. Depot." Written on the back in black ink: "Mounted". Stamped on back in black ink:" Frank T. Meyers Photographer, Rawlins, Wyoming." (Note: Meyers made this copy print not the original photo.) Left edge bent and torn. Emulsion cracked. Paper curling. Upper right corner missing. Emulsion cracked through center in several places, soiled. Cut down from original size-writing on back partially cut off at edges. Original carte-de-visite. 2 1/2 x 4 1/8". Mounted on pink matboard. Written on back in black ink: "Lynched Rawlins Front St Mch 1881 after attempted jail break injuring jailer Robt Ranken" "Was arrested for murder and train robbery and sentenced to be hung in Apr 1881" "Mrh 22 1881". Fair condition. Some writing on back scratched out & covered with black ink. Badly soiled. Mounted on acidic matboard. Mat cracked on back at lower right. Image badly soiled; lower left corner bent. Historic 5 3/16 x 3 1/4 black & white copy print. typed caption taped to top edge: "Big Nose Gorge. 1881". Typed on back: "Photograph of Big Nose George. This is a copy made from the original photograph which is now in possession of Dr. John E. Osborne, Rawlins, Wyoming." "Was lynched at Rawlins, Wyo. on Front St by mob March 1881 after attempted jail break injuring jailer Robt Ranken. George was arrested for murder and train robbery and under sentence to be hung April 1881. Fair condition. Paper yellowed & badly soiled. Typing impacting emulsion. Emulsion scratched, cracked, soiled & fingerprint smudged. Transparent tape on back & holding caption to print. One 10 x 8" black & white copy print. Stamped on back in black ink: "Frank J. Meyers Photographer Rawlins, Wyoming". Written on back" [blue ink] "Big Nose George - George Parrot" [pencil on white adhesive label] "Big Nose George" Written on back in black ink: "George Parrot, better known as "big Nose George". He was a member of a gang which attempted to rob a Union Pacific train. Later the gang shot and killed Widdowfield & Vincent, two Carbon county deputy sheriffs. He escaped and was caught nearly two years later. After being returned to Rawlins, he attempted to escape jail and injured the jail keeper. A group of Rawlins citizens then lynched him on Front Street near where the Union Pacific depot now stands". Fair condition. One inch tear in top edge left of center; one-half inch tear in lower sides - center bottom. Emulsion missing in places around edges; transparent tape on upper left corner. Emulsion cracked throughout; fingerprints on surface. Back soiled.
