Description

Black and white print attached to pale black matboard. Photo depicts the laying of the cornerstone of the Elks Building, 1908. A large group of men wearing dark suits and white shirts with ties are standing on the outer edges of newly erected sandstone walls and on planks of lumber which are laying across exposed basement area supported by outer walls. A partially constructed back wall is seen rising in background. A man dressed in dark suit and overcoat is standing on front wall corner left with an open book in his left hand and an unidentified object in his right hand. A large square sandstone brick is lying at his right foot on a plank. Attached to the outer corner wall is a plaque that reads "Erected 1908 Building Committee J.H. Clause C.E. Blydenburgh JEDOTT" Under this plaque is No.1 in white print from negative. In front of this wall are several saw horses with boy sitting on one. A group of women are standing on ground in front of the wall watching the proceedings. Condition is good. Mat is warped at top and bottom. Mat is faded around outer edges and worn in several places with tears in matboard. Corners are bent and worn. tiny white specks one seen on mat border. Minor soiling on print including pencil mark, smudges and fingerprints. Faint scratch in emulsion. Mat has stain on top back.. A large white label on back side has these names typed on it: " Charles Watson, J.A. Hobbs, H. Larson, Mr. Gunning, Charlie Blydenburg, Walton France, Judge Merrill[sic] Merrell, L.E. Vivion, Jim Clause,
