Description

A black and white scanned copy of a large group of men, ca. 1896, dressed in suits, ties, and all wearing hats of various styles, with a few men with long overcoats over their suits standing and sitting (front row center) in the entryway of a two door building. Door on photo left is shut and door on photo right is open to inside of building . A two toned dog (white on upper torso and dark on rear half) is lying on a wooden side walk in front of the group of men. The dog's head is propped on his forelegs which are stretched out in front. Glass windows are on side left with tropical looking plants seen behind the glass. Side right has matching glass windows with cafe curtains (multi-toned striped) seen hanging on a small curtain rod across the interior window. There is a wooden feature on the photo left side which slants upward from the wooden sidewalk (storm cellar doors?) to the lower edge of the building. Many of the men have upper lip mustaches and several are smoking. Man in first row, side right has a newspaper in his outside jacket pocket. This group photo had been believed to contain Butch Cassidy, Sundance Kid, and the Wild Bunch, but is now subject to much question and believed by donor to be nothing more than the Elks Club members. Measures 8 1/2" x 11 edge to edge." Copy is in good condition with images of water stains seen from original source photograph on what would be the matboard edges. The men have been numbered on the photograph with the numbers and names on side left of the copy. A tiny white image of a sticker? is seen side right with the number 83 on it. It was believed that this photo contains members of the Elks Club in Rawlins as donor was able to copy original photo from the Elks files. Identification number 14 may be a relative of the donor's. List of names: 1. Lafferty, Ed 2. Junquist, Con 3. Galvin, Warren 4. Reid, Chip 5. Ryan, Tom 6. Fridley, Tobe 7. Fridley, Jake 8. Cronin, Bill 9. Lambertson, Ike 10. Blydenburgh, Hal 11. Sharkey, the dog Spelling of names may be incorrect. They are typed as listed on photograph. (other information given at later date). This group photo has been believed to contain Butch Cassidy, Sundance Kid, and the Wild Bunch, but is now subject to much question and may be nothing more than the Elks Club members as listed. Donor has researched the names on the back of the photo and typed the results of the census information. He believes them to be as listed and not the Wild Bunch. It is now believed after comparisons that they are as listed. Update: 2016: donor now concludes that this building is the front of the club saloon owned by Jack Ryan (a supporter of the Wild Bunch). The covered entrance to the saloon basement was added in 1903. He also believes the photo is a group of saloon owners celebrating Tom Ryan's ownership of the saloon in 1905. Hence, by 1903-1905 most of the outlaws were in prison, dead, or in South America.
