Monument erected to the memory of Commodore Perry on July 14, 1901. It was unveiled at Yokohama, Japan. It is of Japanese workmanship cut out of fine quality marble.
Update 2009: Black and white print attached to a cream colored mat with gilt on all edges. Print shows a massive monument attached to a high stone block base with a concrete base between the stone blacks and the solid monument. A man is seated on this concrete base in the front of the monument. Another man is standing on the top rung of a high ladder propped against the monument on side right. A group of oriental men are wearing kimonos with side sash around waits. (Only man on side left of print, man on ladder and man on monument are wearing trousers). In foreground is seen large stone blocks on ground, wooden barrel, piles of straw and mats and a straw hat on top of pile in center. A shovel is stuck upright in the ground in foreground center.
Written on monument at top are oriental characters, beneath this inscription are the words"This Monument Commemorates the first? of Commodore Perry Ambassador from the United States of America..." the rest of the statement is unclear.
Written on back in black ink: "Monument erected to the memory of Commadore Perry of the USNS on July 14, 1901. It was unvielded [sic] unveiled. It is of Japanese workmanship cut out of fine quality marble. It stands near Yokohama, Japan. Floyd E. Hubbard USFS New York United States Navy on Asiatic Station."
Fair condition with heavy soiling on print and mat with dark smudges, scrapes, fingerprints, scratches, minor stains front and back and other anomalies. Wear on corners and back edges.Collection
