Description

Bible owned by John Carlyle; includes pages w/ Carlyle's family history. Front pages to Deuteronomy missing. Title page in New Testament: "THE NEW TESTAMENT/ OF OUR/ LORD AND SAVIOUR/ JESUS CHRIST,/ Newly Translated out of the/ ORIGINAL GREEK:/ And with the Former/ TRANSLATIONS/ Diligent by COMPARED and REVISED,/ By his Majesty's Special Command./ Appointed to be Read in CHURCHES." John Carlyle's family history written by Carlyle on back of title page. Gray paper label w/ black printing on front of Bible and on inside cover: "FAMILY BIBLE/ OF/ Col. JOHN CARLYLE,/ ALEXANDRIA, VA./1747". It is assumed Carlyle made the first entry in 1766 following the birth of his son George William. This theory is based on slight changes in his handwriting and the obvious later insertion of the record of Ann's death following the earlier notation of her birth in 1761. Other family signatures appear in the New Testament but without any text.
