2008.1.1Description
Silk Fragment; c. 1740, Green, Yellow, Burgundy, Pale Pink, and Silver Floral Pattern on Blue Background. Allegedly part of Sarah Fairfax's wedding dress in the late 1740s; current sleeve part of dress as it was remade in the 1790s. First thought to be of English origin (Spitalfields silk), it is now believed to be from Continental Europe (Possibly French).
Note included from donor, Nancy Holt Stowell: "Wedding dress sleeve handed down from Margaret Pegram Holt (daughter of Col. Arthur Herbert), saved by Eleanor Holt (wife of Arthur Herbert Holt), and almost tossed by Nancy Holt Stowell (sister to Arthur Herbert Holt, Jr.)"
There is a button hole at the smaller end from when the sleeve was remade in the 1790s. Corresponds to button stitching on 2008.3.1.
