Description

Interpretive text panel of the sternwheeler Weown printed on wood board. Text panel reads, On June 17, 1933 the steamer "Weown" shot the Cascades of the Columbia River; the stage of water at Portland 24'6", Cascade Locks 30'4", The Dalles 39'8". The crew was: Captain W. F. Horats (Master), Captain Chas Nelson (Pilot), Mr. J. J. McBroom (Chief Engineer), Mr. Jas. Driscol (Assistant Engineer), Mr. Royal Robison (Mate), Mrs. Frances Crego (Cook), Mr. J. L. Biggs (Fireman), Mr. Tom Carson (Fireman), Mr. Knight Knowles (Deckboy), Mr. John Robertson (Deckhand), Mr. G. Brent (Deckhand), Capt. O. J. Hosford (Passenger). The other boats to come over the Cascades were: 1852 "J. P. Flint", 1858 "Ventura" (Wrecked), 1862 "Okanogan", 1871 "Nez Perce Chief", 1870 "Oneonta", 1881 "Idaho", 1882 "Mountain Queen", 1882 "R. R. Thompson", 1888 "Hassalo", 1890 "Harvest Queen", 1893 "D. S. Baker", 1917 "Baily Gatzert". Insurance effected on s/s "Weown" by Durham & Bates. The donor of the text panel Mr. Don Hensgen Stated that he recovered the panel from the local Chinese Restaurant that was closing. It had been hung in the restaurant as decor.

Interpretive text panel is made of wood that have been printed on. There are screws in the back from the old hanging mechanism.

Front of text panel is a printed photo graphic image in brown, light tan and off-white. The top of the image is worn away to a light near white. The bottom of the panel is brown with off-white text. It is possible that the brown was at one point black. The back of the panel shows the tan of the natural wood coloring the edges are brown to match the front of the panel.
