So uncle George started the first penny change business in H. R. Dr. E. T. Carnes was the first permanent dentist in H. R. He studied dentistry with Dr. W. A. Wise and Dr. C. T. Phren in Portland. Are from 1893-1896 when he came to H. R. and opened a office in the Largelle House. It was customary at that time to take a three year course, and learn the profession or you went along study as you went along. Then you go to salem for an examination if you passed then you were ready to go on your own. He came to make his home in H. R. Oct 14th 1896. In 1899 he moved to hat is now 721 Cascade Ave- at that time Cascade ave was River Street. And this was Wasco County. Dr. Carnes friends asked him what he wanted to go way out in the country to live for. Dr J. F. Watt has the first rubbered tired Buggy in H. R. W. D. Rogers had the first auto- moible.
