Description

Foot warmer, made with wood and punched sheet metal. Embers or coals would be placed inside the heater to distribute heat, and people would then place their feet near the heater. There probably was a tray that slid into the box to hold the coals.

Use

During the 1800s, when riding in a horse-drawn carriage or sleigh, the winter weather could be a problem. To help battle the elements in a bitter winter, portable foot warmers were used. They were also used in churches or elsewhere where there was very little or no heat during the winter months,

Context

This foot warmer came from the West Hill Methodist Church in Chelsea
