Context

Nineteenth century hand fans were fashioned in three styles — the pleated, the brise, and the cockade. A cockade fan was a compact circular folding fan and occupied very little space. It had two handles or end sticks known as guards, and opened up to 360 degrees around a central pivot, thus forming a cockade. This style of fan was popular throughout the entire 19th Century, becoming popular during the late 18th Century.
