The Great Snow Storm of 1888. Picture taken at the intersection of Maple Avenue and Main Street (Route 110), between H.R. Hood’s store and the Orange County Hotel.

Context

Chelsea's deepest snow - picture taken in 1888 in the village of Chelsea and is said to be the evidence for the greatest amount of snow Chelsea ever saw at one time. It was taken in front of what was then the A.R. hood & Son drug store, later the Fred Dickinson store. later still Will's store. Shown in the tall fur hat was Sheriff Collins and Henry Lyon was the man with the shovel. Orange county Hotel is the building behind them. Mr. Lyon had cleared of snow a scales where loads of hay were weighed.
