Description

Wooden quartermaster chest with iron handle, hinged lid, and hook and eye closure. The chest is marked G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic) in gold letters on the top.

Use

This chest or trunk was once used by the quartermaster of Waterson Post #45, G.A.R. of Chelsea, VT. In it were kept all monies at hand, legal documents, membership roster etc.. It is quite certain to assume that this chest dates from soon after the civil war, as Waterman post was chartered soon after the war.

Inside the chest is a list of men and women inducted or enlisted in the military from Chelsea and other nearby towns.
