Description

This is known as The Lewis House. It was built by David Hatch in 1830 and sold to Stephen Vincent in 1832. He and his daughter, Mary Vincent Goodrich, lived here until 1903, when the granddaughter of David Hatch, Ellen, bought it. The house was purchased in 1905 by the Lewis Family and became known as the “Lewis Lodge”. It is believed to be the first house in town wired for electricity in 1898. How ironic since it was the only house in town without electricity for many years. Electric service was just recently restored in July 2024. The Lewis family moved from the house in 1965, which is when the Chelsea Historical Society purchased it for $1,500. Fiddle contests helped raise money to buy the house. Today it is the home of the Chelsea Historical Society Museum which collects and stores items from Chelsea’s past and includes displays showing what life might have been like in Chelsea during the nineteenth century. It also houses our research library.
