Description

An incised powder horn made from a cow horn. Has circular patterns carved near the larger end

Use

Powder horns were used for storing gun powder to refill guns or cartridges. With a cord attached to the ends, soldiers, militiamen, riflemen, and hunters could easily carry the horns over their shoulder while out in the field.

Context

Charles A. Gifford (05/10/1843-02/26/1927) was born in Tunbridge and was a resident of Chelsea. His father, Ziba Gifford, carried the horn in the Battle of Bunker Hill. The Battle of Bunker Hill was fought on June 17, 1775 during the Siege of Boston in the first stage of the American Revolutionary War.
