In 1907, a group of dairy farmers in Orange County, New York founded the Dairymen's League Cooperative Association, Inc. to increase their bargaining power with wholesale distributors. By the 1920s, the Cooperative's membership had increased to more than 100,000 farms. In 1923 they began using the trade name “Dairylea.”
