Name/Title
Walter John Szulwach Onion CrateEntry/Object ID
chs-013997Description
Joe Battiato related that he bought this onion crate at a sale in the Florida-Pine Island area. This particular crate was used on their B&B Farm in the Chester meadows until retired from service in the late 1990s. It is typical of the crates used to pick, store, and transport onions harvested from Chester's 'black dirt' farm from the late nineteenth through the mid/late-twentieth centuries. He did not recall the name of the farmer whose initials were "WJS."Context
In the earlier period, each farm made their own crates. Later, farmers bought crates from manufacturers. Starting in the 1970s, wire staples replaced nails in the construction.Category
