Wren House
[reverse]
Overview
Wrens are worth encouraging in your garden since they consume large quantities of pest insects. Hanging wren houses is one way to get these birds to visit your garden and multiply. Wrens are not that fussy about where they nest and sometimes nest in any cavity of the right size, including old boots and abandoned cars. Wren houses should also be out of the reach of predators, such as cats. Too high, though, and wrens may not use them.
Location
Locate a suitable tree or fencepost. Wrens prefer thick vegetation to nest in, rather than very exposed sites. They don't seem to be very picky about where they nest. Wrens are notorious for filling up any conceivable nest cavity with twigs, regardless of whether they use the nest. Since male house wrens build several nests for the female to choose from, hang several wren houses on partly sunlit tree limbs.
Heigbt
Generally, wrens like a house height between 5'-10' from the ground, and not easily accessible by cats. Feel free to pick a eye level spot, if climbing up a step ladder is difficult for you.
Hang
Secure the house below a branch by either rope or twisting wire ends together over the branch. Since male house wrens build several nests for the female to choose from, hang several wren houses at eye level on partly sunlit tree limbs. Wrens are sociable and will accept houses quite close to your house.
