H-O (Hornby's Oats) Cereal Box.Context
Alexander Hornby's first factory during the first 20 years of Hornby's Oats, about 1872-96. The mill and the inn, with gabled roof, faced the Craig general store in Craigville. The success of H-O made it necessary to draw on the West for grain, which was brought to the Erie's Craigville station on the Oxford Road and carted a mile to the mill and then back to the railroad for shipment to market. In 1896 the new owners moved the Craigivlle operation to Buffalo. The success of H-O made it necessary to draw on the West for grain, which was brought to the Erie's Craigville station on the Oxford Road and carted a mile to the mill and then back to the railroad for shipment to market.
Regrettably, there are none now who remember him, and so none can say whether the round little man with miller's apron on the label of the modern "quick oats" package, above a quotation of Dickens, is meant to be a portrait of the miller of Craigville.Acquisition
