Description

Rug beater "The Batwing Beater" found by Marcella K. Hopwood in the attic of Frank & Stella Muruski house when she was a child. Frank & Stella Muruski were Marcella's godparents. Frank & Stella Muruski lived in the "Thaddeus Seely House." According to Mildred Parker Seese, Thaddeus Seely built this house in 1752. The Seely family was a widespread and prominent one in this area, and this house is probably the original family homestead. It is built in a simple, vernacular style with many early features. It has seen some modification and deterioration but its age and family association make it an important aspect of the history of the Town of Chester and of Orange County. Unmarked, perhaps the rugbeater was made by an occupant of this house, or a local craftsman.
