A second sign can also be seen on the roof at the far right just below the cupola, reading "LIVERY SALE BOARDING". The white-shirted group of people sitting on the lawn in front of the hotel appears to be the staff posing for the camera. The Howland House is shown on the 1903 Orange County Atlas as being situated across from the Erie Railroad Station at Chester. It was owned at that time by Hinchcliffe Bros., and C.G. Baldwin is noted as the Proprietor.
