This colorized photo postcard depicts the rustic building with many additions located in which was located in Craigville, just down a bit from the blacksmith shop (the brick house near Route 94) noted as the place where "H.O." (Hornby's Oats) was first manufactured. The factory was operated, first as a grist mill, by Alexander Hornby, 1807-1888 from about 1872 to 1896. The factory, presumedly was powered by water from Cromline Creek. Leafy trees envelop the scene, casting shadows and adding a tranquil ambiance to the surroundings. The architecture features wooden siding, shingle roofs, and a prominent chimney. At the founder's death (1888), Edward Ellsworth bought this mill and, in 1890, relocated the business to Lockport, Illinois.Subject Person/Organization
