"Ulster BOCES. The project grew out of the State Education Department’s updated social studies curriculum which places emphasis on the teaching of local history at the fourth grade level. Since there were only scattered materials available at local libraries, the Orange-Ulster BOCES Curriculum Advisory Council proposed the writing of a local history book. In June of 1982 the school districts appointed delegates to the Local History Committee for the purpose of assembling the manuscript and gathering suitable pictures. The OrangeUlster BOCES undertook the supervisory role and held meetings from June through October for the purpose of coordinating the project. Each representative was responsible for preparing a list of subjects persons, places, events which were to be recommended for inclusion in the book. In the early fall the Committee reviewed and pared down the text to manageable proportions. After several revisions by the Project Editor, various Historical Editors and the BOCES Director, the book went to print in January. It will now enable Orange County’s fourth graders to give their elders some interesting local history lessons. Among those instrumental in the writing of “Orange County - A Journey Through Time” were Carol Ravert of Chester, Nancy Kasch of Monroe-Woodbury, and Martha Diederich of Washingtonville."
