About 1800, the mills along the Cromeline Creek, then called the Crommelin River were producing lumber, grist, paper, and plaster. Hector Craig established woolen mills here and the locality became known as Craigsville. Barrett Ames, who established a cotton mill at Craigville upon marrying Hector Craig's daughter Mary Craig in 1817. He had been a cotton merchant in Mobile, Alabama. In 1842 Hector Craig died and Barret and Mary Ames succeeded him as operators of the mills. Barrett died April 28, 1868 - his mill and cotton factory subsequently burned in the 1870s.Map Details
