Name/Title
The old Yelverton InnEntry/Object ID
chs-019421Description
This monochrome photo postcard shows the Old Yelverton Inn located in Chester, NY, a historic structure captured in the early 20th century, surrounded by dense, leafy trees. The photograph is marked with an erroneous caption that identified the inn as a place where, in 1775, Richard Wisner [selected] delegate to the Continental Congress. Actually, Henry Wisner and John Haring of Orangetown were elected August 16, 1774 at the house Stephen Sloat as Orange County's delegates to the first Continental Congress. Here at the Yelverton Inn on September 3, 1774 he was approved by freeholders from Goshen and Cornwall. The inn is a two-story wooden building, featuring multiple chimneys and an attached porch covered built in 1765.Subject Person/Organization
