1892 Village Board Chairs

The chairs hung in Ramsdell’s antique store at the corner of Academy Ave and Main Chester NY (aka Durland’s store) for years.: The image shows three wooden chairs suspended from the ceiling of an old, rustic wooden building, each chair with classic spindles and slightly worn features, reflecting a vintage aesthetic; the ceiling itself consists of wooden beams that are darkened with age, revealing the building's antiquity, while below the chairs, a variety of wooden panels and objects are scattered, enhancing the sense of an old storage or barn area filled with a collection of aged, weathered items, contributing to an overall atmosphere of nostalgic decay and rustic charm complemented by the sunlit glow casting subtle patterns through the wooden slats.

Description

The first village board of Chester New York was formed in 1892. In August of that year the first meeting was held with the following members who sat in these chairs: President, William A. Lawrence; Trustees, Thaddeus S. Durland, George M. Row, Joseph Durland; and Treasurer, Charles W. Kerner.

Use

The committee members used these chairs during the village board meetings.

Context

In the 1990s, Gary Green, who worked for the Village of Chester, was instructed to take a truckload of stuff to the dump. Recognizing the four chairs in their load from a photo of the first Village of Chester board meeting of August 1892, he brought it to the attention of his superior to no avail. Gary then asked Richard A. Ramsdell to take custody of the chairs. These chairs have hung in Richard’s Antique Store ever since until May 10, 2025 when the Historical Society received them gifted by Richard.
