Letter from Elmer S. Potter, Publisher of the The Household Journal to Mrs. Conkling of Chester, N.Y. concerning the "gift of a plot land," apparently in response to her objection to the recording fee.
Likely, this was a promotion run by the magazine. The plot of land referred to is not known.Letter Details

Dear Madam:-
Replying to your letter of March lst we did give you the land absolutely free, and it did not cost you a penny, the 1.00 paying for subscription to our Journal. It is of course understood by everybody purchasing property, no matter how valuable, it may be, thatthemaking of the deed is to be paid for, and certainly no one would object to pay for the deed after having the property given to them absolutely free. The regular charge for making a deed is $3.00 in New Jersey but we had an understanding with Mr. Frazier that he charge only $1.25 for the deed and we get no part of this money. We think if you will consider a moment you will decide we do exactly as we say we do.
Very truly yours,
