President of the United States Millard Fillmore and members of his cabinet officially inaugurated the New York and Erie Railroad's 448 - mile rail connection between Dunkirk-on-Lake Erie and Piermont-on-Hudson during a two-day trip over the new road on May 14-18,1851. Hailed as the greatest venture of private enterprise at the time, the railroad brought faster interchange of industrial and farm products to the East and West -- truly a milestone in American history.
