Note
The Chester Academy before the addition was added. The Chester Academy was built in 1846, at a cost of $10,000. It was a frame building 50 by 75 feet standing at the corner of Academy Avenue and the Goshen Road, now, 2006, called Brookside Ave. (Route 17M). A 25 foot long addition was added in 1875, the expenses amounting to $5,000. It then accommodated 275 scholars. On the morning of April 9th, 1906, at about one-o'clock the Chester Academy burst into flames, and, in a comparatively short time, was reduced to ashes. Aside from a few rescued books, the only other surviving artifact was the school bell, now resides in the lobby of the new Chester Academy, which opened in 2004. Note Type
