Context

Memorandum of agreement by E. Satterly on May 30, 1815, setting his slave John free two years sooner than promised. The clause in this agreement concerning John's future behavior was probably due to the fact that, under New York's "Act for the gradual abolition of Slavery, March 29, 1799," a slave could not be freed by his master without the determination from the Overseers of the Poor that the freed slave would not become a burden upon the township.
