Description
This Erie Railroad Company’s Rules Manual describes the "Block System" of controlling train movements using blocks of track and fixed signals. Train operators had to manually control the signals. This was an early version of block signaling, and dispatchers and block operators communicated with each other using telegraph, telephone, or radio. The signals at the entrance of each block weren’t connected and didn’t automatically respond to the presence of a train.
