Description
This Telegraph Relay manufactured by the Central Scientific Company (Cenco) of Chicago is a classic piece of early 20th-century precision electrical apparatus. While heavy-duty relays were used by railroads and commercial telegraph companies (like Western Union), Central Scientific specialized in laboratory and educational equipment.
Use
The Purpose of a Telegraph Relay
In telegraphy, electrical signals degrade over long distances due to the resistance of the wire. A operator pressing a key in Chicago might send a current that is far too weak to loudly trip a mechanical sounder in New York.
The relay solves this. It is a highly sensitive electromagnetic switch. A weak, incoming mainline current energizes the relay's electromagnets just enough to pull a lightweight armature. When that armature moves, it closes a local circuit powered by its own local battery, which then operates a loud, heavy-duty local sounder.
