Back: "Ancient Chinese No. 16"; "This picture of a grim-looking man sitting on a tiger, with one arm raised and holding a sword, is painted on the black sedan used on the occasion of a bride returning to her parents' house on a visit, on the third day after marriage. The individual represents a great magician, head of a class of Tauist priests. He is supposed to ward off the pernicious influences of evil spirits who otherwise might cause injury or sickness to the bride.
