Amanda DeHart Collection [1901-2010]

The Amanda DeHart Collection contains records about Christiansburg Industrial Institute (C.I.I.) and border African American life in Southwest Virginia. DeHart collected materials as a student, teacher, and alumni of C.I.I. Included are DeHart’s research for Christiansburg Institute: A Proud Heritage, photographs of the school and nearby communities, artifacts of student life, and records that document the activities of the Christiansburg Institute Alumni Association (C.I.A.A.). The collection is a mixture of original documents and photocopies.

The Archie Rollins Collection contains student records about Christiansburg Institute students who lived in Pulaski, VA. Records include commencement exercises, enrollment records, one oral history, and newspaper clippings.

Materials were created circa early 2000s through 2020s.

C.I. Uniform Collection

This collection contains uniforms worn by students at Christiansburg Institute for classes, extracurricular activities, and graduation. This includes CI marching band uniforms, cheerleading uniforms, and physical education class uniforms. This collection also includes uniforms worn by Christiansburg Institute teachers and faculty; including coach Tillman’s jacket and hat, and a cosmetology uniform. There are also two t-shirts created for the Christiansburg Institute Alumni Association reunion celebrations.

The records include financial reports, deeds/leases, correspondence, inventories/registries, reports, minutes, photographs, and other administrative records. This collection also includes some Radford County materials including; student records, correspondence, reports, and other administrative records. This collection spans the entity of CII’s existence from 1866 to after 1966.

Christiansburg Institute Alumni Association Collection

This collection contains Christiansburg Institute Alumni Association publications such as CIAA reunion booklets, and CIAA board minutes. This collection also contains some materials that were used in the classes at Christiansburg Institute such as 11th grade English materials and cosmetologist state board exam booklets. In addition, publications donated by members of CIAA, and several copies of publications written by Linda Killen about Black History in the Southwest Virginia region.

The CII Diploma Collection contains 18 certificates for students who attended Christiansburg Industrial Institute, The Hill Graded School, and Calfee Training School. This collection includes high school diplomas, grade school diplomas, and other certificates. This collection has documents that range from the years 1921 to 1944.

The Edgar A. Long Papers contain the writings and administrative records of Christiansburg Institute Principal Edgar A. Long. The papers explore Long’s thoughts on religion, education, and race. They also contain administrative records from Christiansburg Industrial Institute from 1906-1915.

This collection contains the digital files of the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church archives. This collection includes photographs, church meeting minutes, research material about prominent families that attended Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, newspaper articles, and a typed history of the church. Please note this collection is digital only and the physical archive materials reside at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in Roanoke, Virginia.

Gladys Sokolow Collection [c.1900-2011]

Records include graduation photographs, C.I.I. alum Waymon Pack’s certificates, student autograph book, newspaper clippings, and a photo scrapbook. The scrapbook contains early photographs from local African American schools and Sokolow’s personal photographs.

John F. Banks Collection [1910-1979]

The John F. Banks Collection contains correspondence, news clippings, photographs, and school publications of Principal Joseph F. Banks. Principal Banks was principal from 1954-1966. The news clippings are about Christiansburg Institute and school desegregation. The correspondence is between Principal Banks and the Friends Freedmen's Association members, Board of Control members, and other educators. The programs were created for school activities, most notably the dedication of the Scattergood Gym in 1953.

The Nellie’s Cave collection is a compilation of legal and research documents that relate to the Nellie’s Cave community located in Blacksburg, Virginia in Montgomery County compiled by Nellie’s Cave local, Elizabeth Fine. Nellies Cave materials include; a Nellies Cave pin, a Nellies Cave t-shirt, and files related to the Nellies Cave Road legal battle.

School Annuals Collection [1888-1925]

This collection contains the records of the Friends Freedmen’s Association, including monthly reports and correspondence from Christiansburg Industrial Institute faculty to FFA members. It also includes annual reports and a catalogue from the institute.

Smokehouse Collection

The Smokehouse Collection contains an assortment of objects, photographs, books, and documents related to the historic Christiansburg Industrial Institute that were previously housed in the Smokehouse Museum on the Christiansburg Institute campus. CIAA reconstructed the historic smokehouse that was on the Christiansburg Institute property circa 1980s and made it an on-site museum to hold their artifacts. This collection is what was on exhibit in the Smokehouse Museum from the 1980s-2017. In 2017, the artifacts were removed and placed in a climate-controlled environment. The collection now resides at the Christiansburg Institute Museum and Archives with the rest of the archives.

Viola Charlton Collection [1944-1997]

This collection contains teaching materials from Viola Charlton’s nineteen years at Christiansburg Industrial Institute. They are reflective of her many classes and clubs. Of particular interest are the original photographs used in the yearbook and the 1963 Self-Evaluation Summaries. The Self-Evaluation Summaries describe the condition of the campus, teaching schedule, offered extracurricular activities, and statistics about classes, graduation rates, etc.
