The Christiansburg Institute's Digital Archives is a public, searchable archive of digital materials related to the history of Christiansburg Industrial Institute and broader African American history in Southwest Virginia. This archive was created by Christiansburg Institute, Inc. Items in the archive are sourced from Christiansburg Institute Museum & Archives and community members who donated digital copies to the digital archive. Christiansburg Institute, Inc., is a grassroots African American cultural heritage and historic preservation nonprofit with a mission of community education, intergenerational empowerment, and the equitable stewardship of African American history, stories, and culture. The Amanda DeHart Collection contains records about Christiansburg Industrial Institute (C.I.I.) and border African American life in Southwest Virginia. DeHart collected materials as a student, teacher, and alumni of C.I.I. Included are DeHart’s research for Christiansburg Institute: A Proud Heritage, photographs of the school and nearby communities, artifacts of student life, and records that document the activities of the Christiansburg Institute Alumni Association (C.I.A.A.). The collection is a mixture of original documents and photocopies.

Materials were created circa early 2000s through 2020s.

C.I. Uniform Collection

C.I. Uniform Collection

This collection contains uniforms worn by students at Christiansburg Institute for classes, extracurricular activities, and graduation. This includes CI marching band uniforms, cheerleading uniforms, and physical education class uniforms. This collection also includes uniforms worn by Christiansburg Institute teachers and faculty; including coach Tillman’s jacket and hat, and a cosmetology uniform. There are also two t-shirts created for the Christiansburg Institute Alumni Association reunion celebrations.

This collection contains Christiansburg Institute Alumni Association publications such as CIAA reunion booklets, and CIAA board minutes. This collection also contains some materials that were used in the classes at Christiansburg Institute such as 11th grade English materials and cosmetologist state board exam booklets. In addition, publications donated by members of CIAA, and several copies of publications written by Linda Killen about Black History in the Southwest Virginia region.

The correspondence is between Principal Banks and the Friends Freedmen's Association members, Board of Control members, and other educators. The programs were created for school activities, most notably the dedication of the Scattergood Gym in 1953.

Smokehouse Collection

Smokehouse Collection

The Smokehouse Collection contains an assortment of objects, photographs, books, and documents related to the historic Christiansburg Industrial Institute that were previously housed in the Smokehouse Museum on the Christiansburg Institute campus. CIAA reconstructed the historic smokehouse that was on the Christiansburg Institute property circa 1980s and made it an on-site museum to hold their artifacts. This collection is what was on exhibit in the Smokehouse Museum from the 1980s-2017. In 2017, the artifacts were removed and placed in a climate-controlled environment. The collection now resides at the Christiansburg Institute Museum and Archives with the rest of the archives.

Of particular interest are the original photographs used in the yearbook and the 1963 Self-Evaluation Summaries. The Self-Evaluation Summaries describe the condition of the campus, teaching schedule, offered extracurricular activities, and statistics about classes, graduation rates, etc.
