Vernon attended Arizona State College (now Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff) and was student body president during the 1960 - 1961 academic year. Following his presidency, he attended Northwestern University.
He substituted and kept the early Church of the Red Rock congregation together until the Reverend Robert Jackson, stepped in and furnished leadership.
Vernon conducted the worship and preached the sermon at the first service of the Church of the Red Rocks, April 3, 1960.
