Paul Towers was scuba diving for abalone when he had his first narrow escape from death. Only luck and his wife Sybil saved him from drowning. Other 'accidents' followed, sinister and inexplicable. Paul's life in Orchestra Beach had always been smooth and secure, almost stodgily conservative for such a young man. His marriage of three years was happy. His self-made success as the publisher of the local weekly made him a candidate for every local betterment committee.
