It is the general thesis of the contributors to this book, which was planned to commemorate the beginning of the second half of the century, that most of the pessimism of the present day is unjustified. While our immediate future does indeed look black, in many ways mankind is on firmer ground than ever before. In Twentieth Century Unlimited the plan has been both to review recent developments and to try to predict those to come.
