Plaster bust of a woman coming out of a flower on top of a neoclassical-style base. White matte ground with painted hair and facial features; base is painted light blue and gold. Bust is held onto base via a metal screw aned large metal place (acting as a nut in holding the screw to the base). Base, therefore, is hollow.
Family tradition (per Ken) holds that this is Clytie, a figure from Greek mythology, a water nymph who loved Apollo (the Sun god), yet whose love was not returned. She sat and cried until her limbs took root becoming the sun flower whose face follows the sun throughout the day. The sunflower is a motif in the front rooms of the Cohen Bray House.Collection
