Luther Wellman, a dedicated, vigorous minister feels a responsibility toward his congregation. How, then, could he help his choir director, despondent, desperate, and finally the victim of tragedy? How could he aid the son of a prominent church member who is accused of larceny and later of rape? What of the (Black) surgeon and his white, wife who seek membership in his church... how would the parishioners accept them or would they? The church itself was falling apart. Could he convince the board that they needed to build a new one?
