Pelham: The 1828 edition is the one to read. Bulwer-Lytton later edited it to make it more Victorian, when he tried to make himself into a Serious Author. The original is witty, insouciant, and a splendid view not only of later Regency life, but gives a clue how the "silver fork" (or Regency) novel got its birth.
Also, Pelham is responsible for men wearing black coats, a fashion that took over 100 years to shake. -Goodreads
Lucretia is a spoiled girl who turns to poison when things don't go her way. Victorian junk fiction of the very highest order. Bulwer-Lytton got horrible reviews for its perceived immorality, in our less principled times it becomes a fun read once you get used to his clunky style. -GoodreadsCreate Date
