William Heard Kilpatrick's friendship with John Dewey strongly influenced his work as a teacher-educator, particularly his numerous books on educational philosophy. Kilpatrick promoted the principles of progressive education when discussing the need for curriculum reform in U.S. schools. As an alternative to the teaching of traditional subjects, he originated the project method of education. Kilpatrick earned A.B. and A.M. degrees from Mercer University, where he taught mathematics and served as the university's acting president from 1903 to 1938.
