Hidariuma Tea Bowl

Hidariuma Tea Bowl

Description

"Hidariuma" 馬 (Hidari Horse on the Left) is a special vessel made in the world of pottery as a symbol of good fortune when a new kiln is fired for the first time (first firing), and is characterized by a design in which the character for "horse" is inverted (mirror writing). When "horse" is read backwards, it becomes "mau" (to dance), which evokes images of celebration, and is considered a symbol of great auspiciousness, with meanings such as good health, long-lasting family fortune, and prosperous business. Since this is only given to the first piece fired in a newly built kiln, it is a commemorative item that is not likely to be made in large numbers in an artist's lifetime. Dated Shōwa 48, which is 1973 When using the kiln for the first time, the character or picture of "horse" is written and fired facing left. This is considered very auspicious. Kiln name: 卯窯 Ugama, it is unknown whether this kiln still exists today. In the world of pottery, it signifies the firing of the kiln and the beginning of full-scale firing of works, marking the birth of a new body of work. Eiko Kuriki I pronounce it "opening kiln.開窯" The 左馬 rice bowls are fired to be given as souvenirs to guests at the first kiln opening, so they are kiln opening commemorative items. This is a tea bowl painted with a horse facing left, which was placed in the kiln for the first firing after its opening. It's a vessel that expresses the joy of building a kiln, with prayers for a good kiln to be built and for safe firings to be completed without accidents. I've painted something like this myself. This one is about 50 years old.
